One of my favourite places in Essex to capture coastal photography is Dovercourt and Harwich. In particular, the lighthouses provide a wonderful focal point for landscape photography.
Harwich Lighthouse Photography
There are a couple lighthouses in Harwich, the high lighthouse and low lighthouse which are located within the same area. The Low lighthouse for me provides more photographic opportunities as it’s closer to the sea. It also has the backdrop of beach huts which provide a leading line into the scene. The High Lighthouse is located amongst a residential so can be a little more cluttered for my style of photography.
Dovercourt Lighthouse Photography
Dovercourt Lighthouse Photography however is more focused on the sea and beach area. The Low lighthouse a couple of hundred yards out to sea is fantastic for long exposure photography and especially providing a minimal look against the sea and sky.
Dovercourt High Lighthouse is lesser photographed as it’s on the beach and closer to the seawall, however it can provide some creative opportunities for framing the low light house.
My gallery mainly focusses on the Dovercourt Low Lighthouse, which the same can be said for many other photographers. For me the options to shoot with a slower shutter speed to capture smaller movements in the water are the best. Alternatively, by lengthening the exposure towards 30 seconds smooths out the water and clouds to create some beautiful imagery that can be displayed as wall art in homes and businesses in the Harwich area.
I do love a Harwich sunrise, which and low tide or high tide can provide a variety of beautiful landscape photos. The pink, orange and purple skies that appear in the sky and reflect wonderfully in the water below transform the scene into a dreamy landscape that takes you away to a wonderful place.
